If your home is a mess, you may not know where to start. The best idea is to start with the rooms and areas that bother you the most or are dysfunctional due to clutter.
If a messy home is causing you stress or anxiety, make sure you have a safe space in your home where you can get work done in other rooms. Consider investing in some household items to create a comfortable, relaxing bathroom that will help you relax and de-stress.

How can you prevent a messy home from becoming a distraction?
Try not to stress! If you take care of and set up one thing at a time, it will be manageable and you will be able to do a good job. Instead of thinking about all the tasks that need to be done in a messy home, focus on one area or room while you work. Break each unit down into manageable steps, and don’t forget to celebrate and acknowledge any progress you make.

Consider creating a cleaning schedule. Plan which rooms will be cleaned on a specific day or if you want to try to complete your weekly cleaning in one day.

Divide the rooms and activities as you see fit and your time allows. You also need to think about how cleaning fits into the rest of your daily life. For example, if you’re going grocery shopping on Saturday, plan to clean your refrigerator on Friday. That way, it will be clean and ready when you get your food home.

Don’t do it all yourself! If you have other people in your household, ask them to help with the cleaning and chores. This is a great way for kids to learn responsibility, time management, organization, and accountability.

Don’t plan all your big cleaning tasks in one day. Combine larger items with simpler items to avoid overdoing it. Remember to give yourself a break and understand that sometimes life gets in the way and that’s okay. As long as you’re committed to doing things regularly when life makes sense, you can put things aside for a while and pick them up later.
