For designer and architect Nishita Kamdar, this 850-square-foot Mumbai home is a personal dream come true.
For her Mumbai home, architect Nishita Kamdar took on a new role that challenged her and forced her to step out of her comfort zone. But in many ways, that role represents the ultimate dream for most designers. In the 850-square-foot residence, Kamdar plays a client who has recently purchased her dream home with her husband. “The challenge as a client and designer is to bring out the best in yourself and the people who live there through the project,” Kamdar explains. This two-bedroom home in Mumbai is a reflection of Kamdar’s creative vision.

“We want this house to be like our cave, our safe place, a place where we can relax and invite friends over,” she says. The living room is decorated in dusty pink and features plush white sofa slipcovers from Gulmohar Lane, a beautiful swing from Kamdar furniture brand Pieces of Desire, and an island desk. Two contemporary paintings by Sri Lankan artist Krishan Kodithuwakku hang above the sofa. Kamdar’s wishful thinking is charmingly evident through one of the custom pull-out lamps, which transforms from a task light into a light for the couple to entertain in. Inside, two loose chairs sit in cement-faced stone, surrounded by monochrome tropical wallpaper from Kalakaari Haath. Alongside this, the chic sage-green bar counter is complemented by a rough-cut stone coffee table. The open kitchen, which overlooks the dining area, is outfitted with red and black Marsala appliances that contrast with the hand-painted turquoise tiles. Kamdar strikes a balance between color, texture, and form, and effortlessly combines all the elements.
The same goes for the fashion, which adapts to the privacy of the home.
A curved Marsala-red ceiling takes center stage in the guest room. “The color palette throughout the house is warm, and each room has its own personality,” Kamdar says. Even some of the lighting. Taupe walls, buttery beige sheers, and honey and walnut floors complete the space. Small details like custom emerald green-toned handles come to life when contrasted. Kamdar’s Mumbai home is a symphony of color and craftsmanship that has ultimately become his “dream home.”
